Michael E. Fleenor is a director based in the Bristol State Street office. He holds the Accredited in Business Valuation (ABV) credential from the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). He is licensed in the Commonwealth of Virginia and the State of Tennessee. Michael specializes in business valuation and provides audit and attest services for employee benefit plans, privately held companies, governmental entities, and nonprofit organizations. He also serves corporate and individual tax clients.

Michael is a native of Bristol, Virginia and graduated from King College with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration and Economics with concentrations in accounting, finance, and management. He is a member of the AICPA, the Forensic and Valuation Services section of the AICPA, and the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants (VSCPA). Michael is a member of the Tri-Cities Estate Planning Council and Land of the Sky Estate Planning Council of Western North Carolina. He has previously served as a member of the VSCPA Peer Review Committee.

Michael is actively involved in community organizations and has served on the Board of Directors of the Rotary Club of Bristol, Virginia-Tennessee and Healing Hands Health Center. He had been recognized as a William E. Skelton Fellow and Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International.

Virginia is an audit and tax director based in the Bristol State Street office. She provides audit, assurance, and tax services to a variety of for profit and non-profit entities, along with tax services for individuals. Virginia focuses much of her time on construction client engagements and employee benefit plan audits. She also provides business valuation services for the purpose of acquisition, gift tax, and estate tax.

Virginia graduated from Emory & Henry College in 2004 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management with an Accounting emphasis. She earned the professional designation of Certified Valuation Analyst in 2009 from the National Association of Certified Valuators and Analysts. She is a member of the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and the National Association of Certified Valuators and Analysts.

Megan has also previously worked for a publicly traded coal company in various accounting and reporting roles.

Lisa is a Director in our Bristol office with over 15 years of experience in public accounting. Her expertise includes audits of employee benefit plans; accounting and assurance services in a variety of industries; individual, partnership and corporate income tax services; and multistate taxation. She is licensed in the State of Tennessee and the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Lisa graduated from the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics in 2001.  In 2004, she received her Master of Accountancy from East Tennessee State University in Johnson City, Tennessee. She is a member of the Tennessee Society of CPAs and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

Lisa is active in the community and has served as a board member for the Bristol Ballet and Girls Inc. organizations, as well as a member on the Bristol Youth Leadership Steering Committee. Currently, she volunteers with her church and children’s elementary PTA.

Holly serves as the Director of Learning and Quality Enhancement for Brown Edwards.  She is responsible for and oversees learning events provided for firm professionals, including teaching several core courses.  Holly also holds many responsibilities in quality control activities, including serving on the firm Accounting and Audit Committee.

Holly’s prior experience includes 16 years with Brown Edwards in the assurance area, providing a variety of services for industries in the public and private sector which include financial institutions, natural gas utilities, municipals and not-for-profit entities.  During this time, she presented at State Banker Associations and Brown, Edwards & Company, L.L.P. sponsored events.

Holly graduated summa cum laude from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1999 with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting and received a Masters of Accountancy from the University in 2000, during which time she taught introductory accounting courses. A current member of the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants, she has served on the Board of Directors of the Educational Foundation and various task forces; she is also a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. She is a graduate of the Bristol Chamber of Commerce Lead Bristol! Program.  Holly currently serves on several boards and committees of organizations within her community.

Ron is a director in the Bristol office and has more than eighteen years of audit experience that encompasses a variety of organizations including governmental, not-for-profit, manufacturing, and transportation. He is licensed in the State of Tennessee and the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Having served on engagement teams since the start of his career with Brown Edwards, Ron has developed a significant level of knowledge with governmental entities and non-profit organizations. He has expertise in working with a variety of governmental and non-profit entities including community development, health and welfare, and low-income housing.

A graduate of East Tennessee State University with a Bachelor of Business Administration, Accountancy major, he also earned his Master’s degree in accountancy at ETSU in 2000. He is a member of the Tennessee Society of Certified Public Accountants, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. Timothy J. Gibbons is a Principal at Brown Edwards in the Charleston office. He has provided valuation and financial advisory services for numerous purposes including estate and gift taxation, mergers and acquisitions, buy/sell agreements, corporate and strategic planning, ESOPs, shareholder disputes, marital dissolutions, and other tax, litigation, and corporate related matters.

Mr. Gibbons’ experience includes business valuations of entities in numerous industries including manufacturing, wholesale distribution, energy, retail, construction, healthcare services, professional services, food service, and holding company/estate planning vehicles. Mr. Gibbons has also provided litigation support services related to business valuations, shareholder disputes, marital dissolution, wage impairment, lost profits in connection with business interruption, and other business matters.

Prior to co-founding Gibbons & Kawash, A.C. in 1992, Mr. Gibbons co-founded a predecessor firm in 1983 and was a supervisor at Main Hurdman (now KPMG) from 1978 through 1982.

She is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the West Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants.  Ruth sits on the board of directors of the Charleston Estate Planning Council and is a past treasurer for the YWCA of Charleston and the Executive Women’s Golf Association, Charleston WV Chapter.  She is also a past president of the Optimist Club of Charleston.  She was a 1986 summa cum laude graduate of West Virginia State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration.

Mark is a Director in the Charleston office of Brown Edwards. He has extensive experience assisting individuals and businesses with tax planning and compliance issues. He represents clients before the Internal Revenue Service and West Virginia State Tax Department and also advises clients with state and local tax issues including consumer sales tax and property tax. In addition, he analyzes and implements fraud related internal control procedures.

While much of his professional focus revolves around assisting closely-held businesses and their owners with customized tax planning and compliance services, he also has considerable experience assisting businesses and individuals in resolving tax disputes with federal and state tax agencies; structuring and modeling business transactions; and providing back-office solutions for small- and mid-sized businesses in numerous industries, including real estate, construction, healthcare, professional services, and dealerships.

Donna Jones is a director based in the Kingsport, Tennessee office of Brown Edwards & Company, L.L.P.  In addition to providing tax planning and return preparation for individuals, pass-through entities, not-for-profits, and corporations, Donna specializes in estate planning and the taxation of estates and trusts and is a Certified Specialist in Estate Planning. Susan Ackley is a director of tax services in the Lynchburg office of Brown Edwards.  With more than twenty years of experience in public accounting, Susan has expertise in the areas of corporate and individual tax, estate and gift planning and non-profit tax planning.  She has worked closely with not-for-profit organizations on both compliance issues related to Forms 990 and 990T as well as issues related to planned giving.

Susan graduated from the College of William and Mary in 1974 with a B.A. in Math.  She also holds a M.S. in Accounting, with a concentration in Tax, from the University of Virginia.  Susan is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (with a PFS designation), where she is on the PFP and Tax subcommittees and the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants. She serves on the Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation board. She is a board and finance committee member at Westminster Canterbury and is on the finance committee at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.

Susan is an audit director based in the Lynchburg office. She focuses much of her time on municipal and governmental entity auditing, specializing in compliance auditing for governmental and non-profit entities, including Auditor of Public Accounts of the Commonwealth of Virginia audit and reporting requirements and Single Audit Act requirements.

Susan graduated from Radford University with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting in 2000 and a Master’s of Business Administration in 2002.

Susan completed Leadership Lynchburg, a nine-month program focusing on community and professional leadership and growth, in May 2010, and currently serves as a member of the board for the program. She also serves as a member of the board for the Central Virginia Foundation for Economic Education and Improvement.

Russell Hicks is a director in the Lynchburg office of Brown Edwards.  He has twenty-six years of experience in public accounting.  Russell works in a variety of areas, particularly in the areas of corporate and individual tax, estate and gift subjects, not-for-profit organizations and construction tax and accounting.

Russell graduated from the College of William and Mary in 1982 with a Bachelors of Business Administration.  He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants.

Russell has been active in many community activities in Lynchburg, Bedford, and Altavista.  He is active in both community and personal projects relating to historical preservation and rehabilitation tax credits, and he frequently lectures on topics relating to Virginia historical antiques and artifacts.  He was a founding member of the Historic Sandusky Foundation, Inc. He currently serves as the treasurer of Lynchburg’s Old City Cemetery and as a member of boards of directors of the Campbell County Public Library and the Campbell County Public Library Foundation, Inc.

Teresa is a Director in the Lynchburg office of Brown Edwards. She previously was with Cherry Bekaert Blue Ridge prior to that location’s merger with Brown, Edwards & Company, L.L.P. in 2019. With more than twenty years of experience in public accounting, she has extensive knowledge of tax compliance, consulting and planning for high net worth individuals, construction, pass-through entities & small businesses.

Teresa is a native of Central Virginia and a graduate of Lynchburg College (now University of Lynchburg) with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. David is a Director in the Lynchburg office of Brown Edwards. He has extensive experience in providing assurance, consulting, and taxation services specializing in the construction and private education industries.

During his career, David has served a wide range of entities in the construction industry, including; general contractors, heavy-highway contractors, trade contractors, and home builders. He has obtained the Certified Construction Industry Financial Professional (CCIFP) designation and has previously served on the internal audit committee and the question-writing task force of the Institute of Certified Construction Industry Financial Professionals (ICCIFP).

In addition, David serves private institutions of higher education and private k-12 schools and is a member of the National Association of College and University Business Officers.

At Brown Edwards, David assists with leading the internal training workshops for managers and associates working in the construction and education niches and serves on peer review and internal inspection teams.

In 2019, David was named a “Millennial on the Move” by Lynchburg Business Magazine.  He completed Leadership Lynchburg in 2017 and currently serves as a member of the Leadership Council.  Currently, he serves on the Board of Directors for Aspire Foundation.

Danielle is a Director based in the Newport News office and has been working in public accounting since 2008.  She focuses on the industries of government, not-for-profit, and construction/real estate and her clients include governmental authorities, state and local government entities, municipal airports, non-profit organizations, government contractors, and multi-family housing properties.  She is well-versed in audit and accounting procedures generally and for the specific industries she serves.

Danielle’s focus with her real estate and construction clients is in helping them to navigate the complexities surrounding the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) reporting and compliance requirements.  This crossover of experience with both governmental audits and construction/real estate clients has positioned Danielle to be a firm resource and client advisor with regard to HUD audits.  She has performed and supervised audits for clients participating in the HUD-insured loan, capital advance, and tenant assistance programs.  These audits include mortgagor cost certifications, contractor cost certifications, and annual financial statement and compliance audits.

Zach is a Director based in the Richmond office and has ten years of auditing, assurance, and business consulting experience serving a variety of industries, including construction and real estate, manufacturing, distribution and not-for-profits.  Zach has expertise working with closely-held businesses with revenues up to $1 billion to assist with short and long term planning as well as financial statement compliance. He also has assisted several clients with mergers and acquisitions, including financial due diligence and purchase price allocation accounting.

In the construction industry, Zach has served a variety of businesses, including subcontractors, general contractors, home builders, real estate developers, as well as ancillary suppliers such as equipment dealers.  These companies range in size from less than $10 million in revenue and 50 employees up to $750 million and over 500 employees.

He graduated from James Madison University in 2010 with a degree in Accounting and also received a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2017.  Zach is a Certified Public Accountant licensed in Virginia.  He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants and Associated Builders and Contractors of Virginia. Zach currently serves as the treasurer for the Autism Society of Central Virginia.

Jennifer is a director in the financial institutions practice in the Roanoke office.  Prior to joining Brown Edwards, she was the Chief Administration and Risk Officer (CARO) for a community bank for 11 years where she was responsible for managing strategic, financial and operational risks across the organization.  In addition to enterprise risk management, Jennifer was also involved with strategic planning, vendor management and project management.  In addition, she coordinated the internal audit function.  During her time in the banking industry, she served on various committees at the Virginia Bankers Association (VBA) and the Virginia Association of Community Banks (VACB), including functioning as the VBA’s Enterprise Risk Management Committee chairperson for several years. Before entering the banking industry, Jennifer worked in public accounting for 14 years.
