As CEO, Jason is responsible for executing and promoting the overall strategic plan, growth, and direction of the Firm, as well as overseeing the day-to-day administration and financial management.  Jason served as a partner in the assurance services practice of the Firm and as a member of its peer review services team, providing peer reviews to large regional firms around the country.  Prior to joining Brown Edwards in 1986, Jason was associated with an international accounting firm.  Jason has significant experience with a wide range of industries including local governments, not-for-profits, credit unions, heavy truck and equipment dealers, and manufacturing.

A magna cum laude graduate from Glenville State College with a B.A. in Accounting and Finance, Jason also received an MS in Accounting from James Madison University where he served as a graduate assistant. He is a current board member and audit committee chair of Feeding America Southwest Virginia, and is a past board member and treasurer of the Civitan Club of Roanoke.  Virginia Business magazine has named Jason a “Super CPA’ in the Government and Not-For-Profit area of practice.

Laura is the Firm’s COO and is based in the Lynchburg office.  Laura has 20 years of experience with a focus on accounting information system services to a wide range of industry niches including manufacturing, non-profit organizations, retailers, and various personal service related organizations.  She specialized in the selection and implementation of accounting information systems for both clients and the Firm.  In her role as COO, Laura provides leadership to the firm’s administrative teams including information technology, human resources, finance and business development.  Additionally, Laura works with various service lines to spearhead many of the Firm’s special projects.

She is a 1997 Ferrum College graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting, Finance and Decision Support Systems.  Laura is a member of the  American Institute of Certified Public Accountants,  Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants and also the CPA Firm Management Association.

Valerie is a partner in the Charleston office with over 30 years of professional experience in a wide variety of areas. Valerie has directed audits of many closely held businesses, employee benefit plans, energy industries, and nonprofit organizations. She has consulted with clients on matters ranging from regulatory compliance to operational issues and internal control. Her clients include professional firms, retailers, wholesalers, contractors, colleges and universities, foundations, religious organizations, and energy industries.

Valerie has been a contributing author and technical reviewer for nationally distributed publications and a featured speaker at industry conferences.

Valerie graduated summa cum laude from Marshall University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

Valerie is a member of the American Institute of CPAs, the West Virginia Society of CPAs where she has served as chair of various committees, and the Charleston Chapter of the West Virginia Society of CPAs. She is also a member and past treasurer of the Rotary Club of Charleston; a member of the Marshall University Division of Accountancy and Legal Environment Advisory Board, and a member of the cultivation committee for Women in Economic and Leadership Development.  She also teaches financial literacy to teenage parents through a program at her church.

Valerie was honored as the AICPA 2012 Woman to Watch–Experienced Leader by the West Virginia Society of CPAs.

Jeff works in the Roanoke office and specializes in the taxation of consolidated and multi-state corporations and pass-through entities, corporate mergers and acquisitions, individual taxation, estates and trusts, and small business consulting.  His experience in these areas includes general tax planning, entity formation and exit strategies, purchase price allocations and tax accounting for intangible assets in business transactions, and the research of federal and state compliance solutions. Jeff’s expertise covers a variety of industries including technology, manufacturing, dealerships, distributors, construction and real estate.

He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2003 with a Master of Accountancy specializing in taxation.  He graduated summa cum laude in 2002 from Averett University, in Danville, Virginia, with a Bachelor of Business Administration with a concentration in accounting.  He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants, and the Roanoke Chapter of the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants.

Stan has over twenty years experience in public accounting with audit and tax experience in employee benefit plans, construction, energy, real estate, retail, country clubs, financial institutions, manufacturing and healthcare.  In addition, he served for three years as a corporate controller in the mining industry.  His other client responsibilities include business consulting and overseeing numerous monthly accounting engagements.  In addition, he is part of our peer review team performing inspections of other firms.  Stan serves as area coordinator for our Bristol office and a member of our firm leadership committee.

Ryan is a partner in the tax department of the Lynchburg office of Brown Edwards.  He has over ten years of public accounting experience and three years of private industry.  Ryan’s experience includes a wide variety of tax services and consulting for both not-for-profit and for profit organizations.  He manages the tax portion of engagements in order to ensure proper compliance and continually reviews for changes needed to improve the organization’s overall tax positioning.

Ryan graduated with honors from the University of Redlands with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting.  Ryan also had a double minor in Mathematics and Economics.  He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and a member of the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants.  He is a graduate of the 32nd class of the Lynchburg Chamber of Commerce Leadership Lynchburg program and has joined the Lynchburg Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Council.  Virginia Business magazine recently recognized him a “Super CPA” in the area of corporate taxation.  Ryan is the treasurer for the Mental Health Association of Central Virginia and a board member (and chairman of the Finance Committee) of the Central Virginia Community College Foundation.

Norman Yoder is an assurance partner in the Lynchburg office. Norman graduated summa cum laude from James Madison University with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Accounting in 1999. He graduated as the valedictorian of JMU’s College of Business, and received various awards for academic success. Norman began his career in Harrisonburg, Virginia, where he worked with a regional firm for six years following his graduation. He joined the Lynchburg office of Brown Edwards in 2005.

Billy is a partner in our Kingsport office. He began his public accounting career in 1989 with Dent K Burk Associates, P.C. after receiving a B.S. degree in Business Administration from the University of Tennessee. He is licensed to practice in Tennessee and Virginia.  Billy serves individuals as well as businesses in several diverse areas such as manufacturing, financial institutions, nonprofit organizations and certain governmental organizations. He consults with clients in various tax, auditing and accounting matters. A native of Kingsport, Billy is a graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School. He and his wife Laura have two children, Carson and Brandon. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and the Tennessee Society of Certified Public Accountants (TSCPA). He has served as an officer in all positions with the local Appalachian Chapter of the TSCPA. His community involvement currently includes serving as treasurer and member of the board of directors for the Rotary Club of Kingsport – Sunrise for the past ten years and member of the board of directors for the Kingsport/Sullivan County Chapter of the The University of Tennessee National Alumni Association.  In addition, Billy is an active member of First Baptist Church of Kingsport, where he has served on the audit committee and administrative committee.

John is an audit partner based in our Roanoke office.  John’s concentration is related to municipalities, healthcare, and HUD entities; he has extensive experience performing organizational reviews as they relate to internal controls and operations.  He also serves as the area coordinator for our Roanoke and Lynchburg offices and East Region Coordinator for the Firm.

Sam is a partner in the Wytheville office with over 35 years of experience. Throughout his career, Sam has gained a considerable amount of tax and accounting expertise in small businesses, individual tax return preparation and planning.  Sam was formally licensed as a real estate agent and auctioneer in the state of Virginia which has provided him with first-hand knowledge in real estate developments and subdivisions.  Sam has extensive knowledge in physician practices, pharmacies, construction, amusement and gaming, logistics and farming.  Sam’s ownership of a motorcycle dealership provides him with extensive knowledge in the dealership industry.

Sam graduated in 1982 from Virginia Tech with a bachelor degree (summa cum laude) in accounting. Outside of his professional work, he is a former President of the Wythe County Community Hospital Board of Directors and still serves as a board member.  Sam is a former President of the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants, Highlands Chapter.  He served on the board of a publicly traded financial institution, of which he was chairman of the audit committee. Sam is a current member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants.

Jeff is a tax partner in the Harrisonburg office.  He has 24 years in the public accounting profession as well as two years in cost accounting with a private university.  His experience relates to all aspects of tax engagements, including return preparation, research, planning and compliance.  Periodically, Jeff is a presenter in seminars on tax-related issues to the public trade associations and other tax professionals.

Jeff was a cum laude graduate of Bob Jones University in 1991 where he received a B.S. in Accounting; in 1993, he received a M.S. in Counseling from the university.  Jeff is a licensed CPA in Virginia, a member of the Tax Practice Section of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and a member of the Tax Resource Group of the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants. Jeff serves on the Advisory Board of the Shenandoah Valley Small Business Development Center. He is a graduate of the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Program and is a member of the Sons of the American Revolution- Fort Harrison Chapter.

Mark is a partner in the New River Valley office of Brown Edwards.  He has over 25 years of experience in accounting and tax services including three years as the controller of a not-for-profit organization.  Mark has extensive experience working with private colleges and universities & other not-for-profit organizations, construction contractors, manufacturers and affordable housing organizations.

Mark graduated from Radford University in 1993 with a Bachelor of Business Administration with a concentration in accounting.  Mark is a Certified Public Accountant licensed in Virginia and Washington, D.C.  He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants. In addition, Mark is a member of the National Association of College and University Business Officers. Mark is a frequent presenter at not-for-profit and private higher education conferences.
