There has been an increasing number of reports related to thumb or flash drives being dropped in public spaces, such as parking lots. These drives can be infected with Malware and Viruses. When plugged into a machine, these infected drives immediately phone home and begin executing their malicious instructions.

These strategies rely on curiosity as well as the good nature of people to return lost property to, in most cases, coworkers, customers or clients. If you ever find a thumb or flash drive, please do not plug it in to see if you can identify who it belongs to. Please deliver it to someone in your IT department. They can safely inspect a thumb or flash drive without exposing your organization to the possibility of a malware or virus attack.
