Gary is a partner and taxation director in the Bluefield office and has over 30 years experience in public accounting.  Gary deals primarily with corporate, individual, partnership, and exempt organization taxation.  He has a strong concentration in wealth and retirement planning and has worked extensively in mergers, acquisitions and sale of business entities, providing strong guidance to the tax planning of these transactions.  Gary has been involved in the formation and tax planning for natural resource companies including coal and timber.

A graduate of Virginia Tech with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting, he currently serves as an equity partner for tax services for the firm.  Gary is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants, West Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants, and West Virginia Tax Institute Board.  Gary is also involved in numerous civic organizations in the Bluefield community.

Don has been a general services partner in the Bluefield/Princeton area for over twenty-five years.  He is responsible for providing audit, tax and management advisory services to a variety of clients throughout the firm.  In addition, Don has experience with financing issues, buyout strategies, and corporate strategic planning.  After serving on the firm’s leadership committee for 6 years, Don became managing partner of the firm in 2001.  His responsibilities include implementation and monitoring the firm’s strategic plan and strategic initiatives.  He works directly with the firm leadership committee and serves as an adhoc member.

Don was a magna cum laude graduate holding a Bachelor of Science degree from West Virginia University where he was also a member of Beta Alpha Psi – National Accounting Fraternity.  He is also a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Virginia and West Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants where he has served on various committees and held officer’s positions.

Stan has served as engagement director or concurring reviewer on various engagements in the financial institutions, assisted living, transportation, employee benefits, and non-profit industries.  His other client responsibilities include business consulting, internal control design and testing, and overseeing numerous medical/dental monthly accounting engagements.

Steve is an assurance partner in the firm’s Charleston office.  He currently performs the concurring review for all SEC engagements in the firm.  He has assisted clients with SOX 404 compliance ranging from providing internal audit of previously documented systems to overseeing the complete documentation of the entire accounting system and controls.  Steve possesses accounting expertise in the area of energy

Steve is a graduate of Bluefield State College with a B.S. in Business Administration concentrating in Accounting and an A.S. in Mining Engineering Technology.  He has been with Brown, Edwards & Company since 1985.  He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the West Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants.  Steve is active within his community and has served as treasurer of the Princeton-Mercer County Chamber of Commerce for over ten years.  He is a past president and past treasurer of The Rotary Club of Princeton.  He has served on various other boards including being a founding director, president and treasurer of the PikeView High School Foundation.  He also currently serves as treasurer of the Princeton Advent Christian Church and is on the finance committee of the Advent Christian General Conference of America.

Betty is a partner of tax services in the Bristol office of Brown Edwards.  She has over seventeen years of experience in public accounting, focusing on tax and consulting for corporate, partnership and non-profit clients.  She also spends a great deal of her time on taxation and planning for estates, trusts and high-wealth individuals.  Within the firm, she is instrumental in providing training on new tax developments as well as keeping abreast of the most up-to-date technology issues.

Betty is a 1996 graduate of Emory & Henry College.  She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management with a concentration in Accounting.  She is a member of the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants Tax Section.  She earned the professional designation of Certified Specialist in Estate Planning in 2002. This designation was awarded by The National Institute for Excellence in Professional Education, LLC.  Betty was named a 2008 “Super CPA” by Virginia Business magazine.  She sits on the board of directors and serves as current treasurer for the Auxiliary to Johnston Memorial Hospital.

As an audit partner in the Charleston office of Brown Edwards, Matt supervises the preparation of for-profit client financial statements and provides consulting in the area of information systems and general business matters as well as business valuation services and fraud investigation as they relate to the construction industry.  In addition to his accounting expertise, Matt has experience as a cost analyst and as an industrial engineer and has worked with civil engineering firms in design and drafting.

Matt holds a Regents Bachelor of Arts with a post-graduate certificate in accounting from West Virginia State College, earned his Master of Business Administration degree from West Virginia Graduate College (Marshall University), and is also a Certified Valuation Analyst and a Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Accounting.  Matt is a member of the American Institute of CPAs, the American College of Forensic Examiners, the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts, the Center of Economic and Industry Research, the West Virginia Society of CPAs, and is an associate member of the Contractors Association of West Virginia.

Ruth is a taxation partner in the Charleston office and concentrates her services in income, estate taxes and planning, and small business financial reporting.  She has represented taxpayers before the IRS and West Virginia.  She is a lecturer and author of several articles on various tax related topics.

She is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the West Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants.  Ruth sits on the board of directors and finance committee for the YWCA of Charleston where she also served as treasurer.  She is a member and past president of the Optimist Club of Charleston.  She was a 1986 summa cum laude graduate of West Virginia State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration.

Harold L. Holstein, CPA, CMM, is a tax partner with Brown, Edwards & Company, L.L.P.  He has been in public accounting since 1995.  He has also worked in private industry with a publicly traded company for six years prior to moving to public accounting.

Harold graduated from West Virginia Institute of Technology in 1988 with a BS degree in Accounting. Over his career, Harold has served a variety of business entities including construction, oil and gas production, timber, mineral extraction, and other privately owned businesses. Services provided for these clients have included compiled financial statements, tax preparation, tax planning and audit support, continuity planning in family businesses, assistance in developing entity structures,  assistance with drilling and operating agreements and other advisory services.  He has also been involved with preparing forecasts and pro forma statements for use in obtaining financing.  While working for the public company Harold had extensive involvement with multi-state tax reporting.  At Brown Edwards, he has worked with many clients that file in multiple states.  Harold prepares and presents at the firm’s annual construction symposium and at other events on current and pending tax issues. He has achieved the Professional Certified Mineral Manager status through the National Association of Royalty Owners CMM program.

Harold is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the West Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants. He is active with NARO, WVLMOA and IOGA through the firm’s associate membership.

Tim George is a director in the Charleston office of Brown Edwards. He has extensive experience dealing with the financial and business issues of privately held companies and employee benefit plans. He has worked closely with various sizes of businesses particularly in the construction and engineering and design industries.

Tim received his B.S. degree in Accounting at West Virginia Institute of Technology and later attended the University of Akron where he received his M.S. in taxation.

Tim began his career in public accounting in 1994 with Humpal, Jones & Co., a local accounting firm out of Medina, OH while attending the University of Akron. Upon graduation from the University of Akron in 1996, he accepted a position with Chambers, Paterno & Associates, A.C. and has continued his career in public accounting with the firm up through its merger with Brown, Edwards & Company, LLP.

Tim is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, West Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants. Tim is also a member of the Board of Directors for the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame and participates in CAWV Young Contractors Committee functions.

Billy earned his CPA certificate in 1992 and became a principal in the firm in 2001. He is licensed to practice in Tennessee and Virginia.  Billy serves individuals as well as businesses in several diverse areas such as manufacturing, financial institutions, nonprofit organizations and certain governmental organizations. He consults with clients in various tax, auditing and accounting matters. A native of Kingsport, Billy is a graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School. He and his wife Laura have two children, Carson and Brandon. He has served as an officer in all positions with the local Appalachian Chapter of the TSCPA. Ryan is a partner in the tax department of the Lynchburg office of Brown Edwards.  He has over ten years of public accounting experience and three years of private industry.  Ryan’s experience includes a wide variety of tax services and consulting for both not-for-profit and for profit organizations.  He manages the tax portion of engagements in order to ensure proper compliance and continually reviews for changes needed to improve the organization’s overall tax positioning.

Norman Yoder is an assurance partner in the Lynchburg office. Norman graduated summa cum laude from James Madison University with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Accounting in 1999. He graduated as the valedictorian of JMU’s College of Business, and received various awards for academic success. Norman began his career in Harrisonburg, Virginia, where he worked with a regional firm for six years following his graduation. He joined the Lynchburg office of Brown Edwards in 2005.

He consults on real estate matters in structuring of projects for developers and owners while providing compliance services for both the historic rehabilitation tax credit program and the Virginia enterprise zone program.  Pat’s extensive experience allows him to provide clients with the financial guidance needed to meet their goals.

During his tenure with the Firm, David has served in a variety of executive leadership roles including the following:

During his leadership, the Firm has had significant growth with small, private colleges and universities. He is a well-respected authority in the industry with experience including:
    • Assurance and related – auditing financial statements and advising on a variety of financial accounting and reporting issues such as presentation, disclosure and transparency
    • Governance and accountability – designing best practices, developing practical ways to meet audit committee responsibilities, and crafting audit committee charters, roles and responsibilities
    • Strategic finance and risk management – business analysis (assessing current resources and projecting future needs), organizational structure, financial benchmarking, strategic debt management (capital additions and debt offerings), reviewing internal controls, and advising on enterprise risk management (ERM)
    • Endowment management – accounting for investments, Uniform Prudent Management of Institutional Funds Act (UPMIFA) accounting issues, unitization of investment pools, spending policies and benchmarking
  • Past Coordinator of the Firm’s assurance, accounting, and quality control for more than twenty years. In this capacity David designed Brown Edwards’ quality control system and successfully led the Firm through four consecutive peer reviews. He was also responsible for reengineering the Firm’s audit process to enhance efficiencies, effectiveness and the implementation of a paperless (green) assurance approach which is still in use today.

David graduated from Old Dominion University in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, concentrating in Accounting.
