Jeff works in the Roanoke office and specializes in the taxation of consolidated and multi-state corporations and pass-through entities, corporate mergers and acquisitions, individual taxation, estates and trusts, and small business consulting.  His experience in these areas includes general tax planning, entity formation and exit strategies, purchase price allocations and tax accounting for intangible assets in business transactions, and the research of federal and state compliance solutions. Jeff’s expertise covers a variety of industries including technology, manufacturing, dealerships, distributors, construction and real estate.

He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 2003 with a Master of Accountancy specializing in taxation.  He graduated summa cum laude in 2002 from Averett University, in Danville, Virginia, with a Bachelor of Business Administration with a concentration in accounting.  He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants, and the Roanoke Chapter of the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants.

Stan has over thirteen years experience in public accounting with a concentration in health care and business consulting and three years experience as a corporate controller in the mining industry.  He is a partner in the firm’s Bristol office. Stan has served as engagement director or concurring reviewer on various engagements in the financial institutions, assisted living, transportation, employee benefits, and non-profit industries.  His other client responsibilities include business consulting, internal control design and testing, and overseeing numerous medical/dental monthly accounting engagements.

Stan graduated cum laude from the University of Virginia’s College at Wise with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting.  Stan is a licensed CPA in the Commonwealth of Virginia.  He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants and the Medical Group Management Association.

Ryan is a partner in the tax department of the Lynchburg office of Brown Edwards.  He has over ten years of public accounting experience and three years of private industry.  Ryan’s experience includes a wide variety of tax services and consulting for both not-for-profit and for profit organizations.  He manages the tax portion of engagements in order to ensure proper compliance and continually reviews for changes needed to improve the organization’s overall tax positioning.

Ryan graduated with honors from the University of Redlands with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting.  Ryan also had a double minor in Mathematics and Economics.  He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and a member of the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants.  He is a graduate of the 32nd class of the Lynchburg Chamber of Commerce Leadership Lynchburg program and has joined the Lynchburg Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Council.  Virginia Business magazine recently recognized him a “Super CPA” in the area of corporate taxation.  Ryan is the treasurer for the Mental Health Association of Central Virginia and a board member (and chairman of the Finance Committee) of the Central Virginia Community College Foundation.

David is a partner and has close to forty years of diversified assurance, accounting, and consulting experience with particular expertise serving private educational institutions and other types of not-for-profit organizations.

During his tenure with the Firm, David has served in a variety of executive leadership roles including the following:

  • Member of the firm’s Leadership Committee (Executive Committee and governing board), a position he has held for over twenty five years. This committee is responsible for the Firm’s overall vision and strategic direction. For the past fifteen years, David has been the chairman of the committee.
  • Firm Coordinator of Internal IT Services. In this role, David oversees Brown Edwards’ information technology systems.
  • Firm Coordinator of Education Services. David started this niche over thirty years ago and currently leads our education team. During his leadership, the Firm has had significant growth with small, private colleges and universities. He is a well-respected authority in the industry with experience including:
    • Assurance and related – auditing financial statements and advising on a variety of financial accounting and reporting issues such as presentation, disclosure and transparency
    • Governance and accountability – designing best practices, developing practical ways to meet audit committee responsibilities, and crafting audit committee charters, roles and responsibilities
    • Strategic finance and risk management – business analysis (assessing current resources and projecting future needs), organizational structure, financial benchmarking, strategic debt management (capital additions and debt offerings), reviewing internal controls, and advising on enterprise risk management (ERM)
    • Endowment management – accounting for investments, Uniform Prudent Management of Institutional Funds Act (UPMIFA) accounting issues, unitization of investment pools, spending policies and benchmarking
  • Past Coordinator of the Firm’s assurance, accounting, and quality control for more than twenty years. In this capacity David designed Brown Edwards’ quality control system and successfully led the Firm through four consecutive peer reviews. He was also responsible for reengineering the Firm’s audit process to enhance efficiencies, effectiveness and the implementation of a paperless (green) assurance approach which is still in use today.

David graduated from Old Dominion University in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, concentrating in Accounting. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants (VSCPA), and has served on the Leading Edge Alliance’s Accounting and Auditing Committee. In addition, David is the past treasurer and chairman of the Finance Committee of Virginia Amateur Sports, Inc., which annually organizes the Commonwealth Games of Virginia.

Norman Yoder is an assurance partner in the Lynchburg office. Norman graduated summa cum laude from James Madison University with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Accounting in 1999. He graduated as the valedictorian of JMU’s College of Business, and received various awards for academic success. Norman began his career in Harrisonburg, Virginia, where he worked with a regional firm for six years following his graduation. He joined the Lynchburg office of Brown Edwards in 2005.

Don has been a general services partner in the Bluefield/Princeton area for over twenty-five years.  He is responsible for providing audit, tax and management advisory services to a variety of clients throughout the firm.  In addition, Don has experience with financing issues, buyout strategies, and corporate strategic planning.  After serving on the firm’s leadership committee for 6 years, Don became managing partner of the firm in 2001.  His responsibilities include implementation and monitoring the firm’s strategic plan and strategic initiatives.  He works directly with the firm leadership committee and serves as an adhoc member.

Don was a magna cum laude graduate holding a Bachelor of Science degree from West Virginia University where he was also a member of Beta Alpha Psi – National Accounting Fraternity.  He is also a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Virginia and West Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants where he has served on various committees and held officer’s positions.

Harold L. Holstein, CPA, CMM, is a tax partner with Brown, Edwards & Company, L.L.P.  He has been in public accounting since 1995.  He has also worked in private industry with a publicly traded company for six years prior to moving to public accounting.

Harold graduated from West Virginia Institute of Technology in 1988 with a BS degree in Accounting. Over his career, Harold has served a variety of business entities including construction, oil and gas production, timber, mineral extraction, and other privately owned businesses. Services provided for these clients have included compiled financial statements, tax preparation, tax planning and audit support, continuity planning in family businesses, assistance in developing entity structures,  assistance with drilling and operating agreements and other advisory services.  He has also been involved with preparing forecasts and pro forma statements for use in obtaining financing.  While working for the public company Harold had extensive involvement with multi-state tax reporting.  At Brown Edwards, he has worked with many clients that file in multiple states.  Harold prepares and presents at the firm’s annual construction symposium and at other events on current and pending tax issues. He has achieved the Professional Certified Mineral Manager status through the National Association of Royalty Owners CMM program.

Harold is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the West Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants. He is active with NARO, WVLMOA and IOGA through the firm’s associate membership.

Mark is a partner in the Wytheville office with over 20 years of experience. Mark has accumulated a substantial amount of tax and accounting knowledge specifically in dealing with small business, individual, estate and trust engagements and examinations of highly complex tax issues. Mark has over ten years of experience in business valuation and litigation support services including divorce settlements, estate and gift tax valuation and sale and acquisition transactions. Additionally, Mark specializes in healthcare, professional service enterprises, retail companies and is licensed as a Certified Quickbooks Pro advisor in dealing with small business computerized bookkeeping systems.

Mark took his studies to the College of William & Mary and graduated with a bachelor’’s degree in 1992. When not at work, Mark has served as a former Member of the VA Society of Certified Public Accountants– Technology Committee, current Board member of Brain Injury Services of Southwest VA, Inc., current Board member of Wytheville Community College Scholarship Foundation, Inc., co-founding member of the Wytheville Morning Rotary Club and serves as current member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the VA Society of Certified Public Accountants.

Jeff is a tax partner in the Harrisonburg office.  He has more than seventeen years in the public accounting profession as well as two years in cost accounting with a private university.  His experience relates to all aspects of tax engagements, including return preparation, research, planning and compliance.  Periodically, Jeff is a presenter in seminars on tax-related issues to the public trade associations and other tax professionals.

Mark is a partner in the New River Valley office of Brown Edwards.  He has over twenty years of experience in accounting and tax services including three years as the controller of a not-for-profit organization.  Mark has extensive experience working with private colleges and universities & other not-for-profit organizations, construction contractors, manufacturers and affordable housing organizations.

Mark graduated from Radford University in 1993 with a Bachelor of Business Administration with a concentration in accounting.  Mark is a Certified Public Accountant licensed in Virginia and Washington, D.C.  He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants. Laura is the Firm Administrator and is based in the Lynchburg office.  She provides accounting information system services to a wide range of industry niches including manufacturing, non-profit organizations, retailers, and various personal service related organizations.  She specializes in the selection and implementation of accounting information systems for both clients and the firm.

She is a 1997 Ferrum College graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting, Finance and Decision Support Systems.  Laura is a member of the  American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and also a member of the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants.
